Laptops & Cameras

Want to work on a computer in a study carrel, study rooms, or one of the reading rooms? Need a digital camera to complete a class project? Now you can check out a laptop, digital camera, or digital video camera - plus all the accessories - at the Library circulation desk!

Take a look at our visual inventories to see what's available for check-out:

Interested? Here are some more important details:

  • You must be a COCC or OSU-Cascades student, faculty, or staff to use the laptops and/or digital cameras. The first time (and only the first time) you check out a laptop or camera, you'll need to sign a check-out contract. This simply ensures that you're aware of the policies concerning these items. You'll also need to have your driver's license, DMV-issued ID card, or passport with you as official proof of ID.

  • In addition to your student ID, we'll need to see your driver's license, DMV-issued ID card, or passport each time you check one of these items out. This prevents someone from using your student ID card to check out one of these items and keep it, thus making you responsible for the replacement charge (yes, this has happened).

  • Laptops & laptop accessories check out for 3 hours and are for IN-LIBRARY USE only. A laptop can be renewed for an additional hour.

  • The digital camera and digital video camera and accessories check out for 48 hours and can be renewed for an additional 24 hours.

  • Overdue fines on all of these items are $5/hour.

  • Stolen, lost or damaged items will result in a replacement charge equal to the cost of the item, plus a processing fee of $15. The cost of these items ranges greatly, from $10 (2 GB flash drive) to $600 (laptops). You are responsible for the safety and security of the item while it is in your possession. If a laptop or camera is stolen while in your possession, you will be responsible for the cost.

  • The laptops do not automatically delete any work you save while working on them. To protect your privacy and security, completely delete all of your work before returning the laptop.

  • You can print directly from the laptops. Any print jobs will be released to the wireless printer at the circulation desk (not the printer in the main area of the library). Printing is black and white & costs .05/page. You will need to pay with cash, not your student ID card.

  • Please delete all pictures and videos before returning cameras.

  • The Library cannot guarantee that any files you may accidentally leave on a laptop or camera will be retrievable at a later date or time.

Curious about what to do with photos and/or videos after you've taken them?

  • In Room 109 (main floor of the library), the manufacturer-provided software is available. That software will allow you to transfer images or video, to edit them, and to save them.

    • IMPORTANT: If downloading videos using the computer in Room 109, you must plug the USB cable into one of the USB ports on the back of the CPU. The USB ports on the front don't provide enough power.

  • For still photos, you don't need any special software to transfer images from the camera to the computer. There are several good photo editors that you can download for free. Try Picasa or FotoFlexer.

  • For either photos or video, you can check out the card Reader/Writer. This device turns the information on the camera's removable SDHC memory card into a format readable by the computer's USB drive, and it works like any other flash drive. You will need to convert the files into a more standard video format if you want to view/edit your videos on the computer. There are several free format conversion tools online. For example, try Any Video Converter.

  • If you want prints of your photos, you can take the camera's memory card or a USB drive onto which the photos have been downloaded to just about any place that provides photo processing (e.g., Fred Meyer, Rite Aid, Walgreen's, etc.). These places usually have machines that will let you select and print some or all of the photos from your storage device.

This is a pilot program. The Library would greatly appreciate any feedback or suggestions you have about the program and/or the equipment! Fill out our survey and drop it off at the circulation desk or email Michele DeSilva (mdesilva@cocc.edu) with your comments.
