Robert L. Barber Campus Library
Cell Phone & Noise Policy
The Barber Library is committed to providing an environment that is conducive to study as well as welcoming to all users. These guidelines were developed in response to concerns from patrons about the increased noise in the library due to social conversation and cell phone use.
When you enter the Barber Library, we ask that you turn off your cell phone ringer. If you must be on call and are using a cell phone, please follow the guidelines below:
- Turn cellular phone ringer off or set to a non-audible signal (flashing light, vibration, etc.). upon entering the building.
- Use designated areas only (see list below).
- Move immediately to a designated area when placing or receiving calls.
Designated 'Cellular Phone Use' Areas: cellular phone use is allowed only in group study rooms on the first and second floor of the library and the student lounge room (019) in the basement. Use of cellular phones is not allowed in all other areas of the building.
In general, you are asked to be considerate of those studying around you and keep your conversations short and your voice lowered, especially in quiet study areas.
Library users wishing to report inappropriate cell phone use or other disturbance should contact library staff at the reference desk. The library reserves the right to ask anyone to leave the building if he/she is using a cell phone in a prohibited area or disturbing others in any area of the library.
